Description
West Venton is a small farmhouse dating from the late 17th century. It is constructed of plastered cob and stone rubble, topped with a corrugated asbestos sheet roof featuring gabled ends, a hipped angle, and raised eaves. The building has chimney stacks at both gable ends; the southeast stack is made of stone rubble and heightened with red brick, while the southwest stack is truncated and also heightened in brick. The farmhouse has an L-shaped plan with two cells by one, standing two storeys tall and featuring a one-by-one window range. The doorway is centrally located in the west range, accompanied by a lean-to porch in the angle. At the rear of the west range, there is a small single-storey outshut.
Inside, both wings have roofs with collars that are halved and pegged into the principals, supported by through purlins. The southwest wing includes slightly chamfered ceiling beams and a fireplace with granite jambs and a chamfered cambered wooden lintel. The southeast wing features a fireplace with a stopped chamfer lintel and stone rubble jambs.
