Description
House. Dated 1633 and heavily restored in 1983/4, it is constructed from stone rubble and rendered cob, with a slate roof and gabled ends. The building has a 3-room and through passage plan, with a 2-storeyed porch and a later rear outshut, alongside 2 short 20th-century rear wings. It is two storeys high, with a 5-window front. The windows are 20th-century, featuring 1-, 2-, 3- and 4-light concrete mullions with hoodmoulds, replacing former wooden casements. The more intact gabled 2-storey porch is located to the left of centre and has a moulded granite door frame with a square head, featuring the carved initials "T and A" on the label stops and a plaque above inscribed with "EA 1633 EA" over a shield flanked by the initials "RA, EA and GA, IA". "A" relates to the Arundel family. The porch has a moulded wooden inner doorframe and a nail-studded door leading to the through passage. The rear through passage door has a wooden, chamfered frame with stops. The gable end, stacks, and axial stack have been rebuilt, topped with moulded concrete caps. A rear outshut is flanked by short, gabled 20th-century windows. Internally, the roof has been replaced in the 20th century, but the porch roof is original and has 2 tiers of collars. A restored plank and muntin screen divides the through passage. The former kitchen has closely spaced waney floor beams and a large end fireplace with roughly hewn granite jambs and lintel, plus an oven with a separate flue. There is also a moulded wooden doorframe at the back of the kitchen and another from the passage to the hall. The hall stack backs onto the passage and incorporates granite jambs and a reused ovolo moulded lintel, while the hall ceiling has been replaced. A partition wall between the hall and inner room has been removed. Three moulded wooden doorframes are present on the first floor. Despite the restoration, some original fabric survives and is included in the listing. A survey was conducted during the restoration work.
