Description

The Congregational Sunday School, built in 1883 by architect Otho Bathurst Peter and constructed by William Burt, is a two-storey building made of brick with a façade featuring polychromatic granite, limestone, and sandstones, topped with slate roofs.

The main Gothic façade, which faces south towards Northgate Street, is of particular interest. It includes polychromatic stone dressings, such as quoins, and is capped by a plain stone eaves cornice. The central entrance features a panelled door with a fanlight, set within a moulded stone doorcase that has a pointed head and keystone, connecting to a decorative storey band. Flanking the entrance, the bays have openings with ashlar architraves and low pointed heads, adorned with Gothic glazing bars on the sashes. The first floor displays a central blank window beneath a Gothic arch, which is embellished with a trefoil panel in relief and a crest below. On either side, there are tripartite round-arched openings with timber sashes and stone cills. The west flank wall is rendered and includes a small modern opening at the ground floor left. Additionally, the west side of the school room features five Gothic-arched openings. The building has undergone alterations in the 20th century.

The interior has not been inspected.
