Description
The Methodist Chapel is a building that underwent rebuilding in 1863, following an earlier chapel, and was enlarged in 1876. It is constructed from killas rubble with granite dressings, featuring rolled kneelers and coped gables, with some brick on the rear elevation due to alterations and some render. The roof is made of asbestos slate.
The chapel has a rectangular aisleless plan with a gallery on all four sides. An organ is located at the east end above a rostrum, and there are a pair of doorways leading to porches added in 1876 at the west end. During these additions, the original central doorway was blocked. The building has two storey elevations and a symmetrical two-window west entrance front, although part of the extension on the right has been demolished. The gable features a trefoil-headed niche above two original round-arched window openings, which have horned copy sashes with glazing bars and fanlight heads. The central doorway is blocked and situated within a lean-to porch that has an arcaded cornice, linking to a surviving pedimented lobby on the left with a round-arched window and a partly-demolished lobby on the right.
On the left-hand return, there are three round-arched horned copy sashes with fanlight heads above original 12-pane hornless sashes, which have hopper lights inserted under the meeting rail. The other side elevation was not inspected.
Inside, the gallery features a rounded west end and a panelled front supported by brackets that cantilever out over slender cast-iron columns. There are two moulded plaster ceiling roses. A late 19th-century organ is located at the east end of the gallery, with a late 19th-century rostrum below that has a moulded balustrade with newels. Most of the original tiered box pews remain on the gallery, while those on the floor of the auditorium were replaced in the late 19th century.
