Mohawk And Adjoining Outbuildings

Mohawk and the adjoining outbuildings are a farmhouse and associated structures dating from the early 19th century. They were built by an ancestor of the current occupants, named Roberts. The farmhouse is constructed from killas rubble with cob on the upper floor of the former wash house and apple loft. It has an asbestos slate roof with brick chimneys at the gable ends, while the shippon has a corrugated iron roof and the wash-house features a grouted scantle slate roof with a brick chimney on the right gable end.

The layout of the farmhouse remains unaltered. It consists of two rooms at the front, flanking an entrance passage that leads to a kitchen/living room on the right and a slightly deeper parlour on the left. A straight flight stair is located at the rear of the kitchen. There is a masonry wall separating the front rooms from shallow rear service rooms, which include a pantry on the left and a scullery on the right. To the left of the house is a shippon with a loft above, built into the bank at the rear. The loft has a doorway in the gable end. On the right side is a slightly later wash-house, which likely includes an apple loft, along with an old lean-to at the far right.

The exterior of the farmhouse is two storeys high with unaltered elevations. The east front is symmetrical with three windows and a central doorway. It features the original door and windows, which are set in openings spanned by shallow segmental brick arches. The door is a four-panel design, and the windows are 16-pane hornless sashes. Both the shippon and wash-house have old doors and windows, with the shippon loft featuring a shuttered two-light window. The wash-house has a two-light casement window with three panes and six panes. The right-hand wall of the house has a two-panel door and a 16-pane horizontally sliding sash above it. The apple loft includes a rear loading doorway with an old ledged door. The interior of the farmhouse is virtually unaltered and retains most of its original features.
