The Edgcumbe Arms with Attached Limekilns and Warehouse

The Edgcumbe Arms is a late 18th or early 19th century inn, now a teashop and offices, with attached limekilns and a warehouse. The building is located on Cotehele Quay, near Calstock.

The inn itself is constructed of slatestone rubble with a slate roof, ridge tiles, and gable ends, featuring gable end stacks with rubble shafts. The limekilns, also of slatestone with stone dressings, are attached to the right side of the inn, comprising three bays. The warehouse is built into the bank and is of slatestone rubble with a hipped slate roof, ridge tiles.

The inn’s original layout was a two-room plan, with each room heated by a gable end stack and a central entrance. A two-bay addition, including a doorway, was constructed around the mid-19th century, accompanied by a rear wing heated by a gable end stack. The front facade is three storeys high and features three windows, appearing nearly symmetrical. The windows are 20th-century casements, with the central windows at the first and second floors being blind and painted. A gabled porch with an open front and a bench is located centrally on the ground floor, with an inner door. A dripstone shelters two first-floor windows on the left side, marking the addition. Slate benches are attached to the right side wall, and a wrought iron sign bracket is positioned at the first floor to the left. The left side incorporates a three-story service wing with various casement windows. A cast iron staircase provides external access to an upper door at the rear. The interior was not inspected.

The limekilns feature three round arches to the front, each adorned with granite keystones. The kilns are built into the bank at the rear, designed for top loading. Inside these arches are vaults with stoke holes at the rear. The warehouse has four storeys; the ground floor has a large door with a cambered head and keystone. The first and second floors have single windows set beneath cambered arches, with shutters. The third floor also has a single window with shutters. The right side of the warehouse is built into the bank, featuring a central external staircase leading to a first-floor door, and single windows to the left and right. The second and third floors mirror this arrangement, with a central loading door and single windows on each side. The rear gable end has an entrance at the second floor level, leading to a door with a flat arch. The interior of the warehouse has not been inspected.
