Vellenewson Farmhouse, Adjoining Outbuildings And Garden Walls To The Front

A farmhouse adjoining outbuildings and garden walls, dating to the late 18th century with an earlier core. The farmhouse is constructed of painted roughly coursed granite moorstone with dressed granite quoins, sills, jambstones, and lintels. It has grouted scantle slate roofs with gable ends, brick chimneys over the gable ends of the house, including the rear wing containing an external stack, and cast iron ogee gutters.

The original design incorporated a very thick back wall and possibly the left-hand end wall of an older house, rebuilt around the late 18th century as a two-room house—a larger kitchen to the left, and a parlour to the right—with a cross passage leading to a stair. Around the early 19th century, a back kitchen wing was added at right angles behind the kitchen/living room. Later in the 19th century, a two-story outbuilding (likely a granary or apple loft) was added to the right-hand side of the house, with its front wall set back, and a single-story stable was built to the left-hand side of the back kitchen. The rear of the house and all extensions are built into a high bank.

The south-east front is nearly symmetrical, with three windows, a doorway, and a window above, positioned slightly right of centre. The doorway likely originally had a six-panel door with flush-beaded bottom panels and a later glazed top section. Remains of a gable-ended porch or hood are visible above the doorway. The ground floor left-hand window is potentially original, a twenty-pane hornless sash. Other windows are later hornless sashes with six or eight panes, all within original openings.

Adjoining the farmhouse to the right is a lower two-story outbuilding, slightly set back, with a doorway at the far left, a central window, and a wider loading doorway above. A loading doorway at the rear provides direct access to the first floor from the bank.

The interior remains largely unaltered since the 19th century, with a complete plan and structure. The left-hand room features Bowtell moulded beams. The front garden is enclosed by a rubble and earth hedge, with unhewn painted granite monolith gate piers. The gateway, aligned with the front doorway, has a 19th-century wrought iron gate with a ramped top rail.

Vellenewson Farmhouse represents a substantially complete 18th-century farmhouse, rebuilt on an older site and in an unusually unaltered condition since the 19th century.
