Description

Garden Cottage is a pair of attached estate houses located about 500 metres northwest of Pentillie Castle. They were built in the mid-19th century, with some later alterations. The buildings are constructed from slatestone rubble with granite quoins and feature a slate roof that is stepped over the two houses, complete with crested ridge tiles and gable ends, and an axial stack with a brick shaft.

The layout consists of two attached houses, each with a one-room plan, side entrances, and shallow rear service rooms. There is a rear lean-to for a scullery behind each house, and each front room shares the axial stack with back-to-back fireplaces.

The exterior is two storeys tall, with the house on the left at a slightly higher level due to the slope of the ground. Each house has a canted bay at the ground floor with plate-glass sashes. The first floor features an 8-pane sash window in a gabled dormer with bargeboards and a finial. The left side includes a conservatory porch with a central door and overlight, and two 12-pane sashes with brick segmental heads on the first floor. There is also a 2-light window at the ground floor to the left. The single-storey rear service lean-to has a brick stack and a 6-pane light. On the right side, there is a central door with two windows to the right, and two 12-pane sashes at the first floor with brick segmental heads. The rear has two central 16-pane sashes at both the ground and first floors, also with brick segmental heads; each lean-to has a door on the inner side and a 3-light casement window at the rear. The interior has not been inspected.
