Description
No. 8 Pydar Street is a house that has been converted into a shop. It dates from the 18th century or possibly earlier. The front features a slate-hung gable end, while the rest of the building has painted rubble and a rendered upper floor on the rear wing. The roof is steep and covered with asbestos slate. The building has a deep plan and faces the street. The low, two-storey gable end has a central early 18th-century twelve-pane horizontal sliding sash window that breaks into the gable above an early 19th-century shop front, which is adorned with reeded pilasters and small panes.
Inside, there are remnants of its previous use as a butcher's shop, including a floor drain and meat hooks, and the space opens up to the boarded underside of the roof structure at the front. The surviving 18th-century window is a rare example of its kind, with only a few similar windows remaining in Cornwall. The early 19th-century shop front is also a notable survival.
