Description
The milestone at the crossroads south of Bodelva is a 19th-century granite structure. It has a rectangular shape with a semi-circular top and stands about 0.75 meters tall. The milestone is painted white and features inscriptions in Sans Serif capitals that read: LUXULYAN / 3 / MILES, with the letters highlighted in black paint. The upper part of the front face includes an inscribed benchmark.
This milestone is one of six 19th-century parish milestones that were erected and maintained by Luxulyan parish, which is notable because there was never a turnpike trust on these roads. It is uncommon for a Cornish parish to have its own distinctive milestones.
The milestone is designated at Grade II for several reasons: it is a clear example of a 19th-century parish milestone that remains in its original location, it has group value with other listed milestones in the area, and it is an unusual instance of a milestone maintained by the parish.
