Description

The milestone, dated 1834, is located south of Chy-Praze and is triangular in shape with two dressed faces and a flat, slightly sloping top. It stands approximately 65 centimeters high. The milestone features large, deeply incised lettering on two faces that indicates the distance to Bodmin and Liskeard, reading: 'L 11 1/2 : B1'.

This milestone is part of a series erected by the Bodmin Turnpike Trust, which was established by an Act of Parliament in 1769. In 1834, the Trust aimed to improve the route from Bodmin to Liskeard and installed several milestones along the new nine-mile route through the Glyn valley. This particular milestone, situated close to the tollhouse, is the first of eight in the series.

The milestone is listed for several key reasons: it is one of the milestones erected by the Bodmin Turnpike Trust in 1834, it remains in its original location and is intact, and it serves as a good example of an early 19th-century milestone, reflecting the standardization of roads and the introduction of turnpikes to meet the transport needs of the increasingly industrial landscape of 19th-century Cornwall.
