Description
The Leek Seed Chapel Stephens Tomb, located northwest of the chapel, is a chest tomb dating from 1822, dedicated to William Stephens, known as "The Old Gardener," who lived from 1740 to 1822. The tomb is constructed of dressed granite, featuring monolithic sides and a moulded lid, with a rectangular plan. There is an inscription dedicated to Stephens on a marble panel at one end. According to local history, William Stephens is credited with saving the chapel fund by bravely convincing three intruders that a pile of leek seed was actually a pile of gunpowder.
