Description
This is a milestone from the 18th century located at SW 771486 NE. It is a tall, slender monolith made of dressed granite, square in shape with a pyramidal top. The milestone features shallow recessed panels on three sides, with the inscription facing the road (to the south) remaining intact. This inscription displays the Arabic numerals "34" above the letter "L," both in relief. The west and east panels have been defaced and have recut inscriptions. The west face shows "BODMIN" above "23M" in simple incised lettering, with a remnant of the letter "R" for Redruth below. The east side has a horizontal inscription that reads "PENZANCE 24" in simple incised lettering. This milestone is one of the original 18th-century Turnpike Road milestones but has likely been moved, as the mileage indicated does not align correctly with the milestone to the east.
