Description
This is a bank barn with integral carriage houses, which was later partly used as an apple loft. It dates from the early to mid-19th century and is constructed from local rubble with dressed granite lintels. The fronts of the carriage houses are weatherboarded, and the building features a rag slate roof that sweeps down as outshuts to the carriage houses.
The barn has a rectangular plan, with a central barn flanked by carriage houses. It is two storeys high and has a nearly symmetrical front. This includes two first-floor slit ventilators on either side of a wide central loading, threshing, and winnowing doorway, which is above a wider waggon doorway that has a two-pane hornless sash window on the right. There are stable doorways at both the far left and right of the barn, along with wide carriage doorways leading to the flanking outshuts. Most of the original ledged doors and windows remain, including three doors at the front and rear of the threshing floor, although the left-hand carriage house and waggon doorway have 20th-century doors.
At the rear, there is a central bank with slate steps leading up to a doorway. The barn has shuttered two-light windows on both the left and right sides, a loading doorway to the left, and an original 12-pane two-light casement window at the far left. The interior is said to be virtually unaltered and retains fireplaces for drying carriages.
Additionally, there is a granite horse trough and a rubble wall on the left side of the barn.
