Description
Trefuge Farmhouse, together with an adjoining barn and stable, dates probably to the 18th century, with the farmbuildings constructed in the early 19th century. The building is made of stone rubble with slate roofing, except for the lower section of the stables, which has a corrugated asbestos roof.
The farmhouse was originally planned with a double depth, featuring an entrance to the left of centre, a kitchen-hall to the right, and a parlour to the left, each heated by end stacks. An outshut originally extended across the rear of the house, likely containing a dairy and kitchen. In the later 19th century, this outshut was raised to two storeys, increasing the height of the house.
To the left of the farmhouse is a rectangular barn with shippons (animal shelters) on the ground floor and a threshing floor above. Behind the barn is an overshot waterwheel within a deep pit, with an outshut positioned above, containing the remains of mill machinery and a pair of millstones. Attached to the right, at a higher level, is a rectangular stable with a loft above.
The front elevation is asymmetrical, with the farmhouse centrally located, the barn to the left, and the stable to the right. The farmhouse entrance has a 19th-century six-panel door within a small porch with a flat roof. A 19th-century two-light casement window is situated to the left, and 20th-century three-light windows are present to the right, each with a dressed stone arch. There are three late 19th or 20th-century four-pane sash windows on the first floor. The stable has no openings on its front wall. The barn exhibits shippon doors on the ground floor and a threshing door with a hood on the upper level. A granite staircase on the rear leads to a threshing door.
The outshut behind the barn contains the remains of an overshot waterwheel in a pit below ground level. Above the pit is a hurst frame containing remnants of mill machinery, and a pair of millstones. The interior of the farmhouse itself was not inspected.
