Description
The House at Illand Nursery is a Grade II listed building that consists of three houses and an outbuilding, now converted into one residence. It likely has origins from the 17th century, with a pair of early 19th-century cottages and a 19th-century outbuilding incorporated into the structure during the late 20th century. The building is constructed of stone rubble and features a slate roof with both hipped and gable ends, along with a stone rubble axial stack.
The layout includes a small two-room plan cottage from around the 17th century on the left, which is heated by an end stack and a rear-lateral stack. Near the center, there is a pair of double-depth two-room plan cottages heated by a central axial stack. An outbuilding with an overall rectangular plan is attached on the right. The left-hand cottage has been converted into a garage with a bedroom above and has been connected to the 19th-century cottages by a small extension. A 20th-century outshut has been added across the rear of the house.
The exterior features an asymmetrical two-storey elevation. On the left, there are 20th-century garage doors in the left-hand cottage. The 19th-century cottages present an almost symmetrical two-window front, with a 20th-century glazed door to the left and two-light casements in the door openings to the right, flanking two 19th-century two-light casements with two similar windows above. To the right, the barn has a wide opening at the rear center with granite jambs, which has been infilled with a 20th-century door, accompanied by a 19th-century two-light casement to the left and a 20th-century two-light casement and a one-light window to the right. The first floor features four two-light casements. The rear elevation of the left-hand cottage includes two small early two-light windows, one of which has been reset, both made of single pieces of Polyphant stone. The interior has not been inspected.
