Description

Penhole House is a farmhouse, likely dating from the 17th century and extended in the late 19th century. It has been divided into two separate houses. The building is constructed of stone rubble, rendered on the front, with a slate roof featuring gable ends and a hipped end to a rear wing. It has stone rubble end, side lateral, and axial stacks. The original layout is uncertain, but the house generally follows an 'L' shape. The main front range originally contained two principal rooms, with a central entrance, and is fronted by a rear wing of single-room plan, containing a staircase projection. A further wing to the rear, probably of three-room plan, incorporates an early to mid-19th century extension. C19 outshut extensions are found on the left side of this wing, along with an adjoining one-room plan cottage. The two-storey front elevation is symmetrical, with a rendered finish, a moulded plinth and a flat string band. A C20 porch with a C19 inner door sits centrally, flanked by two C19 16-pane sashes, echoed by three similar sashes on the first floor. The rear wing’s right-hand elevation features late 19th or early 20th century 2-light casements and 4-pane sashes. A stone rubble garden wall runs to the front, with moulded coping and ashlar gatepiers of square plan topped with pyramid caps, incorporating a C19 wrought iron gate. The owner reports that the rear wing contains early features, including large fireplaces and exposed beams. The interior was not accessible at the time of listing.
