Description
Cairn Cottage is a house that has been converted into tea-rooms. It dates from the early 18th century, with alterations and additions made around the mid-19th century and 20th century. The building is constructed of painted stone rubble and cob, topped with a slurried slate roof featuring ridge tiles and gable ends. It has a two-room plan with a central entrance, and each room is heated by a gable end stack. A straight stair has been inserted across the full width of the passage, and there is a 20th-century addition on the left side.
The exterior is two storeys high with an asymmetrical four-window front. On the ground floor, there are two 19th-century three-light casements on the left and one two-light casement on the right, along with a central 20th-century door. The first floor features three hipped dormers on the left and one on the right, all fitted with 19th-century six-pane sashes. The right end has a 20th-century casement on the ground floor to the left, while the left end includes a single-storey 20th-century addition.
Inside, the straight stair is located in the passage. On the first floor to the left, there is an early 18th-century two-panelled door, and the ground floor rooms have 19th-century beams.
