Description

A pair of possible almshouses built in 1894, on the site of a probable earlier building from 1759. The walls are constructed from killas stone, with granite dressings. The roof is half-hipped, covered in dry Delabole slate, with exposed rafters under the eaves and iron gutters. Dressed granite stacks rise from the side walls. The houses are planned with a double-depth layout. They have a symmetrical, 4-window front, and identical, mirror-image plans, with entrance halls positioned centrally at the front. Each house likely has a reception room at the front and a kitchen at the rear. The design incorporates Gothic detailing.

The two-storey front has a pair of two-centred arched doorways and a pair of two-light mullioned windows with transoms above the doorways, all set beneath a granite coped gable with a central datestone and hoodmould. To either side are a four-light mullioned bay window and a three-light mullioned window. Number 11 retains its original casement and sash windows, while Number 12 has 20th-century replacements and a different front door. Both houses feature original leaded fanlights incorporating coloured glass. A low granite coped rubble wall fronts a shallow garden, with a pair of gateways defined by granite gate-piers topped with pyramidal heads. Dressed granite steps lead up to the doorways. The interior has not been inspected. The property has group value context.
