Description
ST NEOT SX 16 NE 9/106 Hilltown Farmhouse - II Farmhouse. Probably late C17, with rear range of late C18 - early C19 and later alterations. Stone rubble, partly slate-hung. Asbestos slate roof with ridge tiles, 2-span over the 2 ranges, with gable ends and gable end stacks to each range. Plan: Front range of 2-room plan with cross passage; stair inserted in passage probably in C18 - early C19. Late C18 rear range also of 2-room plan, with room to left heated by gable end stack, unheated dairy to right. Range of outhouses attached to left side, forming an L-plan. Exterior: 2 storeys, nearly symmetrical 3 window front; all windows C20 2-light casements, 3 at first floor; front slate hung over the central bay and to right. Off-centre to right, porch with hipped roof and stone bench to left side, inner half- glazed door. Attached to left a single storey range of outhouses with privy next to the house; this forms an L-plan range enclosing a garden to the front of the house, with slurried slate roof and ridge tiles, gable end; 1 door on the garden side. Left side has buttress with drain, channelling water through the rear of the privy. Door to outhouse, with 5 doors on outer side, 1 blocked. The rear range has projecting oven, 2-light casement at ground and first floor with granite lintels. Right side rendered; C20 light in rear range and single storey lean-to. At the rear, lean-to to left and door, C20 window at ground floor left; porch with door and 9-pane light at ground floor to left; C20 2-light window above the porch. Interior: The front left room has fireplace with cambered chamfered timber lintel and granite rubble jambs, oven to rear right. Slate floor. Straight stair inserted in the passage with no evidence of a former rear door. The room to front right has fireplace with flat chamfered timber lintel and rubble jambs. The room to rear right was originally the dairy, with slate floor; fireplace in room to rear left rebuilt.
