Description
Martin's Cove Fish Cellars are fish cellars, likely from the 18th century, with some earlier elements, and were probably remodeled in the 19th century. They are constructed from local red volcanic stone rubble and feature corrugated iron hipped and gabled roofs.
The remains of the 18th-century building include two larger rectangular walled enclosures located on the foreshore, with a gap in the front wall at the center. The northeast section is now roofless, while the southwest part has raised or rebuilt upper sections of the walls and is covered by a corrugated iron roof that is hipped at the southwest end and half-hipped at the northeast end. It appears that the entire left end of the southwest section may have been rebuilt in the 19th century, with the southwest end separately roofed at right angles to the main range, featuring a gable-ended roof.
The early windows are small square openings positioned high in the front wall. Attached to the north end of the south section is a short one-bay gable-ended block with a square window on both the first and second floors. The building is situated on the foreshore rocks, and the stone used for construction was likely quarried from the bedrock of the foreshore, which has been cut away in front of the building to create a pool at high tide and a slipway at low tide.
This building is of interest due to its association with the pilchard industry and is located on a picturesque stretch of coast overlooking the entrance to Plymouth Sound. It is reported to be depicted on an ordinance map from 1738.
