Description
The clocktower, gate-piers, gates, and walls were built around 1850 for Charles Lemon. The structure is made of shale rubble and has a square plan divided into three stages by string courses. There is a doorway on the east side and a clock face on the west side of the middle stage. The upper bell stage features round arched openings on each side and a squat pyramidal stone roof topped with a weather vane shaped like a sailing boat.
To the left, there is a rubble gate-pier with original double gates, and to the right, a single gate with another rubble pier that connects to the yard wall of the former National School. The gates and the cast-iron fence over the right-hand pier are notable for their fine craftsmanship, featuring scrolled decoration at the lock rail level, square cross-braced panels above, quatrefoils on the top rail, and arrowhead finials. Each gate is marked with the Roman numeral III in the middle.
