Description
This is a late 19th-century cast iron signpost located at the top of Passage Hill. The lower part of the round shaft is embossed with the word "CORNWALL" inscribed vertically. The upper section supports four adjustable pointers with rounded corners, secured by bolted collars over a moulded cornice. Each collar is topped with a moulded ball and spear-headed finial. While the uppermost pointer is a replacement, the other three are likely original. The pointers indicate various destinations: the north-west pointer reads "RESTRONGUET BARTON ½ WEIR ¾"; the south-east pointer reads "MYLOR BRIDGE ½ FLUSHING 2¼ PENRYN 2½"; the south-west pointer reads "PERRANWHARF 2¼ TRURO 8¼"; and the north-west pointer reads "RESTRONGUET PASSAGE ½". This signpost is significant as it retains most of its original arms, making it a rare example of its kind, and it serves as a reminder of the historical importance of transport networks for the movement of goods and people.
