Description

The barn and whim house located north of Chyvounder date from the early to mid-19th century. They are constructed from shale rubble and some cob, featuring granite quoins for the barn and granite posts for the whim house. The roofs are covered with corrugated iron and have weatherboarded gable ends, although they were likely originally clad in scantle slate with hips.

The barn is a rectangular single-cell structure with doorways on the southwest end, positioned on slightly higher ground. Attached to the southeast side of the barn is the polygonal whim house, which has open sides supported by two granite posts on each side and a solid end.

Inside, the structures retain most of their original roof features and contain nearly complete wooden threshing machinery. The whim house features an overhead shaft system with a central round post, a round wooden cog wheel braced to the post, and an original wooden yoke that was operated by two pairs of oxen or horses. The word "HANDEROLLANS" is painted on one of the wheel spokes. The barn is connected to a round wooden threshing drum via a round overhead drive shaft.

To the left of the barn is a single-storey shippon made of rubble and cob, which adjoins a 17th-century house now used as a farm building. This house has a hearth at each end (one with two ovens) and two original two-light, internally ovolo-moulded wooden mullioned windows, one of which retains diagonally set bars and a rebate for leaded glazing. The whim house and barn are notable for housing some of the most complete 19th-century animal-powered threshing machinery in Cornwall.
