Description

Greatwood Cottage is a house dating to the late 18th century. It is built of painted rubble with slate sills and wooden lintels, now cemented over. The roof is dry Delabole slate, half-hipped to the south, with a thick brick chimney projecting from the side wall and a further brick chimney over the ridge of the party wall. The roof slopes down to the rear.

The house was originally planned with a kitchen/living room on the left and a slightly smaller parlour to the right. A cross passage leads to a central L-shaped staircase that turns to the right. A single-story outshut was added to the rear, as well as a small 20th-century extension to the rear left.

The east front has a nearly symmetrical three-window arrangement, with a doorway and window above, slightly offset to the right. The doorway has a 20th-century top-glazed door and a small open wooden porch. The windows are original 12-pane 2-light casements featuring thick internally ovolo-moulded glazing bars. The interior was not inspected.

Greatwood Cottage is one of the few 18th-century houses in the area that has not suffered from significant 20th-century alterations, and it is notable for retaining its original casements.
