Description

The Statue of St Michael, located approximately 100 metres east of The Downs in Hayle, was erected in 1934 in memory of Miss Frances E Ellis. This Grade II listed statue features a freestone figure of St Michael, depicted as an angel warrior holding a sword over a slain beast, set on a tall, tapered dressed granite base. The front (north side) of the base includes a memorial inscription. Miss Ellis was a significant benefactor known for her dedication to helping orphans and the sick. In 1902, she extended her house, The Downs, for use as a convent, which became St Theresa's in 1913 and opened in 1914. She also provided land for St Michael's Hospital.
