Description
The terrace walls immediately north of The Downs in Hayle were built around 1880 for Mr. Rawlings and designed by E. and J.D. Sedding. Constructed from granite and elvan rubble with granite dressings, these walls form the front and rear of a rectangular terrace. Aligned with the north doorway of the house, there are two flights of steps: a short flight through the rear terrace wall and a flight of eight steps leading down to the next level from the front wall. At the west end of the terrace, there are two additional flights of steps. The main flight features a plain stone balustrade on either side with projecting chamfered copings. The square-on-plan terminal piers or newel posts are made of ashlar and have moulded caps. The front wall of the terrace is decorated with a balustrade of trefoil-headed four-centred arches at intervals, along with chamfered copings.
