Description

A pair of attached houses dating from around 1800, located on Sion Hill, Clifton, Bristol. The houses are rendered with limestone dressings, featuring a brick party wall and slate half-hipped mansard roof. They have a double-depth plan and are built in a late Georgian style. Each house is three storeys high with an attic and basement, and has a single-bay frontage. Pilaster strips rise to a moulded coping. The raised outer doorways have consoles supporting flat canopies, rectangular overlights—No. 4 has a metal fanlight shaped like a batswing—and six-panel doors, the upper four panels being raised. Canted three-storey bays have three lights; No. 4 has 8/8-pane sashes alongside 4/4-pane sashes, and a single 6/6-pane basement sash, while No. 5 has plate glass. There are two dormers to No. 5 and one to No. 4. The interior has not been inspected. Attached to the front are wrought-iron basement area railings and gates with urn finials, together with capped banded piers, which are also designated as group value.
