Description

A pair of attached houses located on Pembroke Road in Clifton, Bristol, dating to around 1840. The houses are constructed of limestone ashlar with a shared party wall, lateral stacks, and a slate hipped roof. They have a double-depth plan and are designed in an Italianate style. Each house is two storeys high with an attic and basement, featuring a two-window front. The symmetrical façade includes shallow projecting wings with pilasters, a sill band, frieze, cornice, and parapet. The windows are tripartite, with 6/6-pane sashes; No. 3 has a full-height 19th-century canted bay with cornices. The doorways are located in symmetrical end returns, within single-storey porches, incorporating over and side lights with glazing bars and six-panel doors, along with blind outer windows and pilasters.

The interior features a half-glazed door with over and side lights leading to a flagged hall with an elliptical arch and panelled reveals to inner rooms. A dogleg staircase with cast-iron balusters, a curtail, and wreathed rail leads to a first-floor landing with an overhanging platform and a semicircular-arched doorway with a fanlight. Other original features include six-panel doors, panelled shutters, and cornices.
