Description
38 College Green is a former café, now used as offices, built in 1904 by LaTrobe and Weston. This building features granite, limestone ashlar, copper, and mosaic details, with a roof that is not visible. It has a single-depth plan and is designed in the Art Nouveau style, comprising three storeys, an attic, and a basement, with a three-window range.
The symmetrical front has an altered ground floor clad in red granite, featuring three chamfered openings; the right-hand pair has been combined into one, supported by a Tuscan column leading to a console and gablet above the fascia. The upper floors showcase pedimented two-storey outer buttresses, with narrow full-height recessed windows. These windows are adorned with copper hoods featuring Art Nouveau floral designs on the first floor, while the third floor has oculi with moulded surrounds and festoons below the pediments.
In the centre, there is a two-storey, four-light timber bow window, separated by a mosaic panel, topped with a segmental arch that has alternate raised voussoirs, all beneath a segmental flat canopy that extends over the third-floor windows. The parapet curves down over the buttresses, displaying three tall narrow windows in the middle.
Inside, there is a right-hand stair flight with panelled sides, tall first-floor square balusters, and plaster strapwork on the ceilings throughout. The building also features impressive Art Nouveau fireplaces with copper hoods, glazed tiles, and inlay, all framed by tall segmental-arched surrounds. This building is considered one of Bristol's finest examples of Art Nouveau architecture.
