Description

30 College Green is a house that has been converted into a shop and office, dating from around 1730. It is possibly designed by James Paty the elder, with the ground floor altered in 1865-6 by Foster and Wood. The building features limestone ashlar, red sandstone ashlar, granite, brick gable stacks, and a slate roof, showcasing a mid-Georgian style with elements of Venetian Gothic Revival on the ground floor.

The structure has a double-depth plan, standing three storeys tall with a five-window range. The ground floor includes an arcade of five semicircular arches with moulded hoods; the leftmost arch leads to a through passage and is supported by granite piers with carved marble capitals for the inner windows. The end piers are made of sandstone and feature moulded capitals with inscribed foliate decoration in black mortar. Above the arches, there is a carved limestone band adorned with acanthus leaves.

The upper floors are characterized by outer pilaster strips, with the middle three windows projecting slightly forward and flanked by pilasters. A band and string course, modillion cornice, and parapet complete the upper section. The ground-floor windows are plate glass, while the first-floor sashes have small five-stepped voussoirs, and the second floor features three-over-six sashes. The left-hand arch leads to an open carriage passage supported by corbels beneath a 19th-century roof. A notable six-panel side door to the upper floors has back cross-boarding.

Inside, the ground floor has cast-iron stanchions supporting the roof and moulded corbels. The first floor features an open-well staircase on the left, with an uncut string, stick balusters, column newels, and a ramped handrail.
