Description
A pair of attached houses with a later addition, numbers 21 and 23 Pembroke Road, Bristol, were built around 1840, with number 25 added around 1850. The houses are constructed of limestone ashlar with lateral and party wall stacks, and have a roof that is not visible. They have a double-depth plan, and each is three stories high with a basement. The front elevation is symmetrical, with the end window bays set back, and the middle windows set in shallow projections. The ground floor is banded, with a plat band, a second-floor sill band, a raised moulding to the middle windows, a frieze, and moulded parapet coping. Porches on the return ends have paired pilasters and a moulded coping, overlights with diagonal bars, and four-panel doors. Centre oriels are situated above the entrances. The ground-floor windows have cornices, with tripartite windows containing 6/6-pane sashes, and flanking 2/2-pane sashes. First-floor windows have architraves and 6/6-pane sashes, while the second-floor windows have 3/3-pane sashes. Number 21 has a mid-20th-century concrete stair block to the left. Number 25 is a full-height canted bay extension to the right, with sill bands, and the doorway to number 23 is set within the window to the left. The interior features a half-glazed screen door leading to a stair hall containing an open dogleg staircase with cast-iron balusters and a curtail. Original features include 6-panel doors, panelled shutters, cornices, and fireplaces. Group value is demonstrated by the architectural harmony of this terrace.
