Description
Numbers 12 to 15 are a terrace of four houses built around 1772, possibly designed by Thomas Paty. They are constructed from brick with limestone dressings and feature brick party wall stacks, with the roof not visible. The houses are in a mid-Georgian style, each having three storeys, a basement, and an attic, arranged in a three-window range. The façades have two handed pairs with rusticated pilasters leading to a cornice and parapet. There are 20th-century porches over the outer doorways, which have segmental overlights and six-panel doors. The windows have cambered heads with five stepped voussoirs and fluted keys, featuring 6/6-pane horned sashes. The right-hand pair includes two slate, hipped dormers. The basements project, with steps leading up to the doorways.
Inside, numbers 14 and 15 are now interconnected. Number 15 has a fully-panelled front room with fluted Ionic pilasters beside a fine fireplace that includes carved fruit, rocaille, and an eared overmantel, along with a modillion cornice. There are fluted pilasters framing a semicircular hall arch that leads to an open-well staircase, which features three column-on-vase balusters per stair, column newels, and a ramped rail, as well as panelled shutters and doors. Similar details can be found in number 12.
The houses also have attached wrought-iron spiked railings and gates leading to the front steps and areas. King Square was laid out around 1742 by George Tully.
