Description

A pair of houses, numbers 41 and 42, were built around 1850 by William Armstrong in the Late Georgian style. They are located on the south-east side of Somerset Street, Kingsdown, Bristol. The houses are stucco-faced with limestone dressings, and have a hidden roof. They are arranged over three storeys and have a two-window frontage. Pilasters articulate the facades to a stepped cornice and parapet. The left-hand doorways are semicircular-arched, with consoles supporting moulded canopies, and each has a six-panel door and a tear-drop fanlight. The windows are mostly 6/6-pane sash windows, some with original horn detailing; the second-floor windows are smaller and set within semicircular-arched recesses. The interior of the left-hand house features a dogleg winder staircase above the doorway, with turned balusters and newels. Attached spear-headed area railings are part of the original design.
