Description

The gateway attached to Thornton Hall and Edgecumbe Hall is a structure built around 1830. It is made of red pennant rubble and limestone ashlar. The wall extends approximately 40 meters from the southeast corner of Edgecumbe Hall and features panelled piers at the left-hand end, along with rusticated corner piers. The gateway includes a well-crafted ashlar archway, which is adorned with paired fluted half pilasters supporting a panel above. There is also an entablature and a pediment with foliate carving, as well as an architrave to the doorway that has a scrolled head.
