Description
No. 4 Castle Street is a late 19th-century building. The ground floor is constructed of red brick with stone quoins, while the first floor is finished in stucco, featuring a cornice and a parapet. The building has two storeys and eight windows, which are unbarred sashes with moulded architraves. The ground floor windows have segmental arches with keystones, and there are side doors and a central window that is round-arched with keystones. The side and central bays are slightly advanced. This building is listed as Grade II because it is part of a very important group of structures in the town center.
No. 4, along with Nos 4 to 6 (even), 6a, 8 to 12 (even), 12a, 14 to 18 (even), and the King's Arms Hotel, forms a group with Nos 1 to 11 (odd) opposite. This group also includes the Castle signboard of the King's Arms Hotel and the Constables House and Town Bridge across the street. Additionally, Nos 10, 12, and 12a are part of a group on Millhouse Street, and the Town Bridge contributes to a group to the east. Nos 8 and 10 are noted as buildings of local interest.
