Description
This is a picturesque group of former stables, dating from circa 1855, likely associated with the Pembroke Hotel. They are now used as garages. The stables comprise three steep gables constructed of painted brick with overhanging eaves and bargeboards; the gable on the left is larger, encompassing a pointed-arch entrance to a covered courtyard. Number 5, likely accommodation for a coachman, is a tall, gabled, three-storey house rendered in stucco, and currently has a shop on the ground floor. The entrance arch leads to a large, covered courtyard with a polygonal end, roofed by large, diagonal openwork supports that originate low down and feature a pitched skylight in the centre. A similar entrance at the opposite end emerges under a steep gable on West Hill Road, at numbers 39 and 41, accompanied by five smaller gables, also with overhanging eaves. The ground floors of both fronts have piers faced with brown glazed tiles, which are presumed to be later additions.
Numbers 1 to 17 (odd), 25 to 31 (odd), 39 to 45 (odd), and 2 to 34 (even) Poole Hill form a group with numbers 166 to 196, even Poole Hill, and also the West Hill Road facades of numbers 1 to 11 (odd), 17 to 21 (odd), and 41 to 45 (odd). These facades form a further group with The Pembroke Arms, West Hill Road.
