Description
The Castle is a Grade I listed structure located on Castle Street. It was originally a motte and bailey castle built by Richard de Redvers during the reign of Henry I. The castle was demolished by order of Parliament in 1651, but remnants remain, including a mound and two blocks of stone rubble masonry that are 9 feet 8 inches thick, accessible by steps. The western block features one window opening, while the eastern block has two window openings.
The Castle, along with Nos 1 to 11 (odd), the signboard of the King's Arms Hotel, the Constable's House, and the Town Bridge, forms a group with Nos 4 to 6 (even), 6A, 8 to 12 (even), 12A, 14 to 18 (even), and the King's Arms Hotel opposite. Additionally, Nos 10, 12, and 12A are part of a group on Millham Street, and Nos 8 and 10 are recognized as buildings of local interest.
