Description

The Talbot Village Almshouses, consisting of Nos 1 to 7, were built in 1862 by C C Creeke. They are designed in a picturesque yet symmetrical Romanesque style, constructed from coursed Purbeck rubble with dark brown ironstone voussoirs. The building features three two-storey gables topped with finials and kneelers, along with four smaller gables above the entrance porches. Between the main gables, there is a single-storey section with a deep slate roof and stone chimneys that have set-offs on their slopes.

Each window arch contains pairs of round-arched lights, with diamond lattice glazing in the tympanum. The doors also feature round arches, as do the blind recesses in the upper storey of each main gable. A stringcourse runs above the windows and porches, adding to the architectural detail. The rear of the building includes blind recesses in three gables, along with modern extensions below. Additionally, there are grouped freestanding storehouses on the site.

All the listed buildings along Wallisdown Road and Columbia Road are part of a cohesive group.
