Description
St Mark's School, formerly known as Talbot Village School, was built in 1862 by C C Creeke. It is a picturesque, though modernised, asymmetrical group designed in a buff brick Romanesque style, with some surviving lattice glazing. The entrance building is single-storey, featuring round-arched windows set under gables, with a cornice made of angle set and projecting bracketed bricks. Behind it is the main hall, which has a steep slate hipped roof and a stepped triplet of arched windows under a gable on the south side. There is a large hipped dormer with three arched lights in glazing bars, and full-height windows for classrooms located to the south and north-west. To the west is a projecting wing, which was the former school house, featuring numerous gabled round-arched dormer windows of varying sizes. At the back of the hall is a round-arched bellcote with a gable on kneelers. A small single-storey gable to the north-east includes a bull's eye window above a round-arched window. Modern wings have been added to the north and west. All the listed buildings on Wallisdown Road and Columbia Road form a group.
