Description

The Poole Arms Public House is a public house located on The Quay in Poole. It dates back to the early 17th century, with extensions added in the late 17th to early 18th centuries, and a refacing that occurred in the mid-19th century. The building is constructed of brick with a faience front and features three front gable brick stacks, with the outer stacks being blank, and a tiled roof. The layout is a right-angle two-room plan, and the building stands two storeys high with an attic, presenting a two-window range.

The green-glazed tile front has a coped gable with kneelers and darker impost bands on each floor. A near-central doorway is framed by a darker surround and pediment, with shallow segmental-arched heads above two 2/2-pane sash windows that have keys. A central name panel is located in the gable. At the rear, there is a gable featuring a 4/8-pane sash window set in a flush frame, along with a ground-floor pent.

Inside, the public house has undergone alterations in the mid-20th century, but it is reported to contain a 17th-century fireplace in the east wall, which has chamfered jambs and a four-centre-arched lintel. Historically, Poole was known for its significant ceramic industry in the 19th century, and several public houses in the area feature decorative glazed fronts, with the Poole Arms being noted as the finest example.
