Description
10 High Street is a house that was first built in the 16th century and later re-fronted, heightened, and altered internally in the early 19th century, with additional changes made afterward. It underwent restoration in the late 20th century and is now used as a commercial premises.
The front range of the building is rendered, while the south-west return features painted, coursed, squared limestone rubble and English bond brickwork. The rear is stuccoed. The roof of the front range is tiled and has brick stacks located below the ridge at the rear. The building has a double-depth front range, which was originally single depth, along with a later parallel rear extension.
The structure stands two storeys tall with attics in the front range. The front elevation has six windows. The left-end bay includes a carriageway with lateral beams that have three-inch chamfers, and a sash window above it. Two rusticated pilaster strips frame the remaining five first-floor windows. The central entrance features a late 20th-century doorcase with pilaster strips, a fluted lintel, a cornice, and a 20th-century timber eight-panel door. To the left of the entrance, there is an early 19th-century-style bowed shop front with a cornice and glazing bars, while to the right are two horned, six-over-six-pane sash windows. The first floor has matching windows, and there are three late 20th-century dormers.
Inside, the building reportedly has a six-bay 16th-century roof with tie beams, cambered collars, and queen posts, along with an 18th-century fireplace. The central through passage is divided by an elliptical arch, leading to a top-lit stair hall that contains an open winder, dogleg stair with a curtail, stick balusters, and round-arched niches at the half landing.
