Description

No. 8 Church Street is a house dating from the early 18th century. It is constructed of brick, with a header bond pattern and rubbed brick dressings to the flat arches and a moulded brick eaves cornice. The front has a rendered plinth, brick gable stacks, and a tiled roof with stone slate verges. The house follows a double-depth plan and is two storeys and an attic in height, with a four-window front. A brick plat band runs across the front, with a central doorway featuring panelled pilasters, brackets, an open pediment, a round-arched doorway, a painted fanlight, and a six-panel door with the upper pair of panels round-arched. C20 horned six-over-six-pane sash windows are present, along with two hipped dormers containing six-pane casements.

The interior includes a central passage opened to the right-hand room and divided by a round-headed arch resting on fluted pilasters. There are deeper, wider rooms on the left-hand side, and smaller rooms on the right. The ground floor includes plank and muntin panelling, while a rear stair has been altered on the ground floor and features column newels, column-on-vase balusters, and a moulded rail. Raised fielded panelling is found on the ground and first floors, along with box cornices. Ground-floor fireplaces are set diagonally in the rear corners, and a large basement kitchen fireplace is in the right-hand gable. Fire surrounds have been removed from the first floor. Panelled doors are present throughout, and the roof, which is partly obscured, has heavy collars.
