Description

Two houses, built in the late 18th and early 19th centuries, now combined into a single property. The buildings are constructed of brick with a rendered plinth, a brick gable stack, and a hipped tiled roof. They are designed in a late Georgian style, arranged on a single-depth plan. The property has three storeys, an attic, and a basement, with a four-window front. The left-hand house has two storeys, while the right-hand section, originally the side elevation of number 2 Church Street, has three storeys. The left-hand house features a doorway with pilasters that support a cornice, a six-panel door, and six-over-six pane sash windows within exposed frames, all with gauged brick flat arches above. The right-hand section has a single ground-floor window and also features six-over-six pane sash windows in exposed frames, also with segmental arches above. The ground and second floors of the former number 2 Church Street were rebuilt around 1965, and the joinery from this time consists of gauged brick flat arches over six-over-six pane ground-floor and first-floor sashes, and three-over-three pane second-floor sashes. Dormers with hipped roofs are located on each side. A lead hopper and downpipe are positioned at the corner. The interior has not been inspected. Historically, number 2 faced Church Street as part of a terrace with numbers 4 and 6, and originally included a shop window that has since been blocked and replaced with a pair of 19th-century windows. The building is now incorporated into number 24 St James's Close.
