Description

A pair of houses dating from the mid-19th century, situated on Oakley Lane, Poole. The houses are built of yellow brick with moulded brick dressings, featuring a brick ridge stack and a tiled roof with decorative bands of fishscale tiles. Constructed in the Tudor Revival style, they have a single-depth plan and are arranged as single storey with an attic. The front has a two-window range. A key feature is the paired central gables and outer gabled porches, with eaves displaying sawn purlins. The doorways are arched and have label moulds, with boarded doors adorned with decorative false strap hinges. The gables feature mullion windows with two horizontal glazing bars in casements, along with label moulds; there's also a small loop window in each gable. Terracotta panels, displaying the numbers 40 and 41 in Gothic lettering, are positioned above the ground-floor windows and doorways. Inside, the spaces are plain, with staircases leading from the entrance hall. These houses are part of a larger group of estate cottages, numbered and known as Lady Wimborne Cottages, built for the owner of Canford Manor. They are significant examples, contributing to the group value alongside other estate farm buildings located on the north side of Oakley Lane.
