Description
Canford Bridge is a road bridge built in 1813 by engineer John Dyson, with repairs made in the 19th and 20th centuries. It spans three arches over the River Stour, with an approach from the south. The bridge is constructed of coursed squared Portland stone and Portland stone ashlar, while the approach features coursed squared carstone, carstone ashlar, and red brick. The bridge has three high segmental arches, with pointed cutwaters on either side and a solid coped parapet that has moulded stone coping and square pier terminals. Inscribed on the stone of the north pier of the central arch, just above the water level, is: "THIS BRIDGE FINISHED / IN THE YEAR 1813 / BY, / JOHN DYSON, ENGINEER / JESSE BUSHROD, MASON." The south approach to the bridge includes six segmental arches, semicircular cutwaters, and solid parapets made of red brick in English bond, topped with stone coping. There is a raised stone band at road level, and the arches are made of red brick. The bridge carries the B3078 road.
