Description

79 and 79A High Street is a house that has been converted into commercial premises, dating from the early 18th century. The front of the building was remodeled in the mid-20th century, with further alterations, including partial rebuilding of the rear additions, occurring in the later 20th century.

The structure is primarily made of brick, rendered at the front, and may include some timber framing. The roof is covered in plain tiles, featuring brick gable-end chimney stacks and a brick stack at the rear.

The building has a single-depth plan with rear additions and consists of two storeys and attics, while the additions are single storey. The main (north) elevation has four bays with two shop fronts. The shop front at 79 High Street includes mid-20th century plate-glass windows, a lobby entrance with a mosaic floor that bears the name "MORTONS," an awning, and a modern fascia. It also features a probable early 20th-century timber panelled stallriser and flanking pilasters with reeded mouldings. The shop front at 79A is also mid-20th century.

On the first floor, each bay has a timber two-light window with leaded panes set within plain recesses, and above is a coved and moulded eaves cornice. The building has two rooflights that replaced earlier dormer windows, along with additional rooflights on the rear slope.
