Description

73 High Street is a two-storey building with an attic, originally part of a larger early 16th-century house, which included 75 High Street. The front was remodeled in the mid-19th century, and a new shop front was added in the early 21st century. A rear outshut was added in the 20th century.

The building is made of coursed, squared limestone rubble that is rendered, with roofs covered in plain clay tiles. It features a brick gable-end chimney stack. The layout is single-depth, with the former great chamber located on the first floor.

The exterior is three bays wide. The current shop front, installed in 2021, replaced a mid-20th-century version. On the first floor, there are three horned, plate-glass sash windows with cambered heads, above which is a moulded cornice and a 20th-century parapet. The two hipped dormer windows contain three-over-three sash windows, and there are blocked former openings on the north-east wall.

Inside, the building retains three bays of the original early 16th-century, five-bay roof that extends over the adjacent 75 High Street. This roof features straight collars and tie beams, along with alternate curved wind braces. The former first-floor great chamber boasts an enriched early 17th-century plaster ceiling with a geometrical pattern of moulded ribs, foliate bosses, roses, and formal sprays of fruit and foliage, as well as an arabesque frieze. There is a stone fireplace with a three-centre arch, double cyma moulding, moulded stops, and a herringbone brick back. To the left of the fireplace, there is a winder stair with stick balusters.
