Description
This property comprises a group of late 18th-century houses originally located on High Street, with a second storey added in the mid-19th century, alongside later 19th-century houses facing New Orchard, now used as commercial premises.
The building is constructed of brick laid in Flemish bond, with a brick gable-end stack. The roof is covered in plain clay tiles. The overall plan forms an 'L' shape, encompassing a pair of double-depth houses on High Street and a rear range, formerly houses, extending to the northwest.
The High Street elevation is three storeys high and features a six-window front. The bay on the far left has an arched doorway with a fanlight on the ground floor, and is blank above. Number 50 High Street has a late 19th-century shop front with consoles supporting a fascia featuring moulded square blocks and a cornice, with outer doorways leading to a five-light plate-glass window. Number 52 High Street has a late 19th-century corner shop front with thin mullions, consoles, and a fascia, incorporating a splayed corner doorway overhung by the first floor. The original eaves cornice of the first floor now functions as a string course. The mid-19th-century addition of a second floor is characterised by serrated brickwork and a moulded eaves cornice. Windows on the first and second floors are predominantly two-over-two sash windows, while the two bays to the right on the first floor have six-over-six sash windows, all set beneath rubbed brick flat arches. The gable return facing New Orchard has a single window at first and second floor levels on the far right (north), with a visible trace of a lower, original gable.
The northwest range onto New Orchard (numbers 1, 3, and 5) is also three storeys high and has a four-window front. Late 19th-century shop fronts are situated on either side of a blocked former archway. The windows are mostly six-over-six sashes, with a narrow four-over-four sash window positioned above the former arch, and a two-over-two sash window to the right. Number 5 New Orchard has a late 19th-century shop front with a blind brick elevation above. The north-west elevation itself is of two bays, featuring six-over-six sash windows.
The interior was not inspected in 2021.
