Description

This is an Italianate stucco terrace, built around 1850 to 1860, designed to step up the hill. It comprises numbers 6 to 18 (even), 18A, 20, 20A, 22, 24 to 34 (even) on Poole Hill. Numbers 6 to 12 retain their original residential entrances; number 12 has a Tuscan porch approached by steps. The lower parts of the remaining houses have been altered with the addition of single-storey commercial additions to the front. Each house is three stories high and three windows wide. The first-floor windows are linked by a thin stringcourse that projects on small brackets, forming triangular pediments over the centre window of each house. The original cornice is present on numbers 6 to 10 and 14 to 16, with the roofs set behind a parapet. The rear of the terrace is also stuccoed, and includes numerous extensions. Number 34 is slightly set back and features an asymmetrical two-story canted bay window on the upper floors. Numbers 1 to 17 (odd), numbers 25 to 31 (odd), numbers 39 to 45 (odd), and numbers 2 to 4 (even) on Poole Hill form a group with numbers 166 to 196 (even) on Commercial Road.
